About BooBook Education

BooBook Education strives to be:

  • attentive to the needs of secondary students and their teachers,
  • forward-looking, as we remain abreast of changes to pedagogy and curriculum,
  • innovative, as we design and publish materials on a range of platforms as well as in print.

BookBook Education’s team includes practising English, Literature, EAL and English Language classroom teachers, VCAA writers and assessors, expert test developers and data analysts, researchers, creatives and administrative staff.

Janny McCurry

Janny worked in Government, Independent and Catholic schools in Victoria for many years, teaching Literature, English, EAL and English Language.  She was a member of VATE Council and Executive for eight years and chaired the Professional Learning sub-committee during that time. Janny was a founding partner of BooBook Education in 2013. 

Janny has postgraduate qualifications in Language and Literacy, with a special interest in grammar and social linguistics, and ways of scaffolding student learning in these areas. She has worked for the VCAA as an assessor in English, English Language and Literature, on a range of panels including examination setting, course review and text selection, as well as writing exemplary course materials published on the VCAA website. 

Janny has a range of publications including The leading edge VCE units 3 & 4, with Rosie O'Shea, VCE English Units 3&4: Whose Reality? for Oxford University Press, and LingoFile, LingoPhat and VCE English Units 1&2, 3&4, written with Nicole Hacking for BooBook Education.

Doug McCurry

Before joining BooBook Education in 2021, Doug was a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Council for Educational Research. Prior to joining ACER in 1988 Doug was a teacher of English and humanities in secondary schools (1975-1987) and the Chief Examiner for Literature in Victoria (1980-1992). Doug has wide experience in the assessment of verbal and humanities tests, and he has worked on the development and analysis of multiple-choice, short answer and essay tests. 

Doug designed the General Achievement Test (including the writing sub-test) and managed the production of the test for more than twenty years.  He has a particular interest in the assessment of writing, especially in test conditions.

While at ACER, Doug designed and was test developer and director of marking for, among other writing tests:

  • The Special Tertiary Admissions Test;
  • The NSW Selective High Schools Writing Test; and
  • The Graduate Medical Entry Writing Test.
